This is a very interesting topic to write about, there is no defined way or steps into turning you into a full fledge professional game developer but there are good tips to help you along the way. In this article, I will write about the steps I used to become a game developer.
First off when you want to learn any new skill, the first thought that comes to mind is learning from a school, self-help, or getting a mentor/pro to tutor you and any of these are good in their way.
Personally, I had to use self-help to teach myself game development and this was mainly affected by the lack of resources I had, now there are advantages and disadvantages to this and you might wonder what? I am going to break each learning factor and write out the advantage and disadvantage of them.

  1. Learning from a school: When you learn game development from a school it helps you understand the basics of game development properly and you will also have your fellow peers learning with you. So you feel even more compelled to learn more. The disadvantages of this are you might be too dependent on your teachers or peers to help you with everything and might not do it yourself.
  2. Learning from a tutor: I think learning from a tutor/pro is very similar to learning from a school the only differences are you will not have your peers learning with you and the tutor will only focus on you and it will lead to you developing/improving tremendously and the same disadvantage from step one will also apply to this, being too dependent on the tutor.
  3. Self-Learning/Development: I think everything is different from the way you learn and how you learn it. As I said earlier, Ideally, you want to use the first two first steps to learn game development, but there might be people who do not have much cash to finance the education or do not just want to learn from a school/tutor, This is when self-learning comes to play. You will have to read books, watch online courses and videos and try to understand, So you can implement them. The hardest part is implementing it. You watch so many courses and videos, that you might become too reliant on those videos, then when you want to create a project you are lost on how to do it and will try searching for a video to help you, that is the biggest disadvantage to self-learning. But in terms of advantages, you will be able to learn on your own, improving yourself and fine-tuning your skills in your way.

These are some of the steps in which I have listed above and depending on your choice. You will have to pick any one of these to learn game development and be a professional at it.
